Female travellers have different needs than their bearded counterparts. That belief is the basis behind Venus Adventures, a tour operating group launched exclusively for women who wish to travel on their own or with groups of girlfriends. Julie Paterson, who divides her time between Switzerland and New Zealand, explains her motivation for launching the company.

Lucerne is now the home of Switzerland’s longest climate trail. Full of ups and downs, the trail aims to raise awareness of environmental issues while encouraging people to think about how they can make a difference.

Jaws of life: A rescue dog pulls a boat with her teeth.

Flailing and splashing, a panicky-looking woman cries out from the middle of the lake. A Belgian Shepherd leaps from a nearby boat into the water, a lifebelt in tow. Moments later, the dog brings the floating ring to the struggling swimmer. She grasps it and holds on tight as the dog hauls her to the safety of the boat.
