Of course, the people watching is also fun.

The cost of living being what it is in Switzerland, designers based here have an extra business hurdle to navigate, as I explained in a previous story: “Fashion industry explores ‘made in Switzerland’ dilemmas.”

So in case you want to support local talent, the Mode Suisse 9 Pop-Up store is open in Zurich until February 13, 2016.

Fur trim and coats are trendy, but are consumers aware of the grim conditions for most of the animals involved? A Swiss label law aims to inform, but many say that an outright import ban is needed.

It’s cold and everyone walking around Bern is dressed warmly, except for one woman. Clad in her underwear plus a scarf and boots, she’s also wearing a sign that says, “I’d rather go (almost) naked than wear fur”. She’s been collecting signatures for a petition to ban the import of fur products made with animal-torturing methods.

“It’s going really well – people have been very supportive. I’ve got so many signatures that I’ll have to get more forms,” Daniela tells swissinfo.ch. A moment later, a woman with a fur coat and bag walks past, giving her a dirty look.

Asian-inspired fashions are now an international trend, but a Zurich designer has been combining Japanese aesthetics and European elegance for years.

Kazu Huggler doesn’t try to be trendy. Having studied Japanese art and aesthetics, the Japanese-Swiss designer is more interested in creating clothing that is both beautiful and practical.

“For me it’s not about long sleeves or a wrap dress; it’s about how to transform the philosophy of wearing a kimono,” Huggler says. Click here to read the whole story.

Zurich hosts its first “fashion days”

While other cities have fashion weeks, Zurich has been making do with a single night. That changed this year when the city hosted its first Fashion Days. The four-day event has expanded to include a business forum, award presentations and seven blocks of fashion shows at the Puls 5 cultural center.

“Switzerland is quite known for design – in particular textiles and architecture. But it’s not like Italy or France, where you’re born with fashion in your blood,” said Erhard Schwendimann, Bally Shoe Factories’ area director for southern and western Europe.
