What do blue potatoes, white strawberries and curly-haired pigs have in common? They’re all under the wing of ProSpecieRara, a Swiss foundation that strives to protect rare animals and plants from extinction. Now active for more than a quarter of a century, ProSpecieRara is as busy as ever. Its latest goal is to prevent 150 plant species from becoming “illegal” in Switzerland.

Exhibition honors 100 years of Hans Erni

This year, Swiss artist Hans Erni is 100 years old. To celebrate, the Museum of Art Lucerne is hosting a retrospective – the first major Erni show in nearly 40 years. The exhibition features a mix of favorites and lesser-known works in a variety of media. Both popular and controversial, Erni is one of Switzerland’s best-known artists.

Despite the bounty of tasty local fare, there are some foods that expats living in Switzerland can’t seem to live without. With this in mind, shopkeepers specializing in British and American products are filling a market niche as they fill bellies with crumpets, cookies and cheddar cheese.
